Why my Dog is Limping. A lot of people have been noticing that their dogs are limping. They could be going out for a walk and one minute they’re happy to go along then all of a sudden, he or she just won’t move. You notice that there’s something wrong because the dog is holding up a paw as if it’s in pain!
Well, if this has happened to you, don’t panic yet. Most likely your dog has sprained its paw or worse…you may think it broke its leg but it probably didn’t.
There are few reasons why dogs limp and I’ll tell you some of them below: First things first though – if the dog starts limping during an exercise, make sure you stop what you’re doing and take him back home. It may seem like a good idea to keep going but it’s not good for the dog and doing so can only make things worse.
Why my Dog is Limping
Other causes of limping besides paw injuries include bites or stings, infection, broken toenails, or burns. All of these cause pain upon impact which as we’ve established is the main reason dogs limp . You may also notice your dog licking the area continuously.
Well what are some of the reasons why your dog might be limping?
- If you’re out on a walk and he suddenly holds up a paw, stop and see if he’s just a little tender. He might have gotten a stone in his paw, which is very painful. Be sure to check all 4 of his feet and give each one a thorough look over. If you can’t find anything, check the pads for any cuts or lumps. It’s not uncommon for dogs to get stones stuck in their paws and this is something that you can’t leave to get worse! If it’s only a stone, then use tweezers to pull it out then wipe the area with antiseptic wipes.
- Another reason why your dog might be limping could be related to his joints or bones. This would include conditions such as arthritis, hip dysplasia, or any other problems that are causing pain in the legs or feet.
- Try massaging it for a few minutes then see if he feels better. If you notice that he still does not want to move, take him to the veterinarian as soon as possible because arthritis can be very painful!
- Another thing that could cause your dog to limp is sores on its paws. Some dogs have skin conditions which can leave them with sensitive skin especially around their paws so they might start limping if there’s something bothering them there. If you’ve noticed an area of raw skin or swelling, apply some hydrocortisone cream on it and see how he gets on after that.
- Ear infections are another common reason why dogs start limping. If you notice that your dog is shaking his head or scratching at his ear, he could have an ear infection which will really make him feel bad. The best thing to do would be to take him to the veterinarian as soon as you can.
- It’s also possible for your dog to limp because of Cushing’s disease which is often associated with old age or obesity in pets. Again, if anything like this happens then it’s time for a trip to the vet!
What should I do if my dog is limping?
There are some supplements that you could consider giving your dogs such as Grapeseed extract, Green Tea extract, or even CBD oil.
You may not know this but dogs produce cannabinoids in their bodies too (endocannabinoids) and these actually help to reduce pain and inflammation.
Now there’s a study here that shows that CBD works just as well with dogs as it does with humans when it comes to treating arthritis. So if your furry friend is suffering from arthritis then this would be something worth looking into!
